Bergen has always been famous as The City of Rain with annual average precipitation of around 2250 mm (88 inches). The high rainfall is due to its location surrounded by mountains causing orographic lift to the moist North Atlantic air that yields heavy rainfall. Most of the rainfall is recorded in the months of January and July. Summers are pleasant with mild and warm weather in the months of July and August.
The weather of the city is greatly influence by Gulf Stream. Winters in the city are chilly with temperature below freezing point in the months of December through March. Snowfall occurs on odd days. The month of May is supposed to be the best time to visit Bergen because of the least precipitation in the month.
