Aer Lingus Profile

In April 1936, Aer Lingu Teoranta is registered as a private airline company by the Irish Government. In 1947 Aerlínte Éireann was founded as a company for transatlantic flights to New York and in 1960, it was renamed Aer Lingus – Irish International Airlines. The name Aer Lingus is the anglicized version of the Irish word 'aerloingeas', meaning air fleet. On April 1958, Aerlínte Éireann operated the first transatlantic service from Shannon to New York.

Aer Lingu Teoranta in1965 started services of BAC-one Eleven from Dublin and Cork to Paris and via Manchester to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt. In 1969, the new Boeing 737 was purchased. Aer Lingus even introduced two 747-100 and later a third one was added in 1971.
In 1984, the Irish airline formed a wholly owned subsidiary, Aer Lingus Commuter, which was supposed to serve inner-Irish destinations, for which no large jet planes were needed. In 2001, the Commuter was reintegrated into the main airline. The last Boeing 737s were removed from the fleet in 2005.

In the summer of 2005 Aer Lingus was awarded the prize ‘Airline of the Year 2005’ by the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland’s Air Transport Users Council (ATUC). In March 2007, it announced that, as a consequence of the Open Skies Agreement, service to several US destinations would be commenced in Autumn 2007. The total company employs is 4000.
