Air Baltic is the national airline of Latvia, is situated in Riga, the capital of Latvia. The airline was established on August 1995 and started operations on October 1995. Its main hub is Riga International Airport (RIX). Air Baltic is also the largest airline at its secondary hub in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Air Baltic airline was established by the joint venture between Scandinavian Airline System (SAS) and the Latvian state.
The first Air Baltic aircraft, a Saab 340, at Riga. The first Air Baltic AVRO RJ70 arrives in Riga in 1996 and it joined SAS frequent flier club as a partner. It operates cargo department in 1997. The first Baltic Fokker 50 arrives in Rigain1998. In 1999, Air Baltic became a joint stock company, and all of their Saab 340s were replaced by Fokker 50s. By September, the airline had begun operating under the European Aviation Operating Standards, or JAR ops. The first Boeing 737-500 launched in 2003.
In October 2004, Air Baltic reframed as air Baltic. The airline anticipates increasing its fleet to at least 30 aircraft and expects to replace current Boeing 737-500s with a total of 12 Boeing 737-300 and Boeing 737-400. In December 2006, the first Boeing 737-300 was delivered to Air Baltic.
