Air Namibia

Air Namibia is the national airline based in Windhoek, Namibia (a neighboring country of South Africa) and is the national carrier of Namibia. It started with name South West Air Transport in 1946, turning into Suidwes Lugdiens in 1959. The major destinations of Air Namibia are Windhoek, Frankfurt and London in Europe, Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa, Luanda in Angola and many destinations within Namibia. The main hub of Air Namibia is located at Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport.


Air Namibia was established in 1946, and started operations in 1948. It was later renamed South West Airways in 1959. Air Namibia merged with it and the airlines was renamed in 1978. Lugdiens The government of Namibia acquired majority shareholdings in 1982, and it becomes a national airline in 1987. It was renamed again to the to Air Namibia in October 1991, when the country got independence. In the 1990’s it launched Boeing 747 aircraft were used for services to Europe. In 2002 it optimized the schedules for connecting flights to Cape Town and Johannesburg. In August 2004 a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 in a two class configuration and newly obtained Airbus A340-300 in late 2005. In early2006, Air Namibia has obtained a second A340-300. In November 2006, it launches the third flight to Luanda, Angola.
