Incoming boss says Qantas won't fly discount

Tue 5 Aug 2008
MELBOURNE - QANTAS Airways' incoming chief executive said on Sunday that his promotion from a discount subsidiary does not signal that Australia's flagship airline would shift to the budget market.

Mr Alan Joyce, who heads Qantas' discount carrier Jetstar, was appointed last week to replace Mr Geoff Dixon at the helm of the airline in November.

'The rumour going around is that we are going to try and make Qantas into a low-cost carrier,' Mr Joyce told Australian Broadcasting Corp. television.

'That would be absolutely the wrong thing to do.'

The 42-year-old executive said he would continue with Mr Dixon's strategy that had made Qantas one of the most successful carriers in the world. -- AP
